August | Taylor Swift
Augustine's story
Taylor Swift is such a clever and brilliant woman that she made us sympathize with every character in the love triangle story— Betty, the realist persona, her enigmatic lover, James, and the fanciful romantic, Augustine.
In this song 'August', we see Augustine reminiscing her clandestine affair with James. As far as I think, this particular story is set in a coastal city/town as implied by the line "Salt air, and the rust on your door". The salty air in beach towns causes metal to rust rapidly. This is a typical setting for the song as it is about a summer fling. It could've taken place during the summer break when James had probably gone on vacation.
So much for summer love and saying 'us'
'Cause you weren't mine to lose
You weren't mine to lose
In the above lines, Augustine is thinking about her illicit 'summer love' with James. She says that he was never hers, so she never lost him. Even if she had loved him, which again has been very clearly implied throughout the song that she was infatuated with James and "Never needed anything more", but the her feelings don't seem to have been reciprocated by James. For him, it was just a 'summer thing' and there was only Betty in his heart the whole time.

ONE YEAR OF FOLKLORE BY TAYLOR SWIFT (JULY 24, 2020)
In isolation my imagination has run wild and this album is the result, a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness. Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory. I’ve told these stories to the best of my ability with all the love, wonder, and whimsy they deserve. Now it’s up to you to pass them down.
